About the Crime Map:

Using data published online by the VCU Police Department, we’ve developed a searchable database of crimes reported by the VCU PD. All of this information is already published online on the department’s website and is easy to find and view. However, the information as posted isn’t easily searchable and doesn’t give viewers a big-picture understanding of crime around VCU.

The VCU Crime Map is meant to be a tool for use by the community, similar to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Homicide report. The database gives users the ability to search crimes by location, date, time, type of crime and more, and using Google Maps, users can visualize the concentrations and locations of crimes around both campuses.

This map includes only those crimes that occur within VCU Police Jurisdiction, which includes both campuses, parts of the Fan, Carver, Monroe Park and more. View the exact VCU Police jurisdictional boundaries here.

The Commonwealth Times would like to thank VCU Mass Communications professor Jeff South, Richmond Times-Dispatch Digital Media Specialist Abdellatif Boudaouch and the Richmond Times-Dispatch for their help gathering and sorting the data and developing the database and interface. This effort wouldn’t have been possible without their help and patience.

We’d also like to thank Caspio Inc., which helps news organizations and other companies publish databases. Caspio has given the VCU School of Mass Communications a complimentary academic account, which the Commonwealth Times used in creating this map.

This map and database are fully functional, but we hope to continue to improve their presentation and functionality as time goes on. If you have suggestions for improving the map, please email butterfielem@commonwealthtimes.org.
