Several computer thefts were reported Wednesday in a safety alert e-mail sent by John Bennett, the senior vice president for VCU Finance and Administration.

Bennett stated, in the past two days, two students sitting near Monroe Park late in the afternoon had laptop computers snatched from them and stolen. The theft follows a similar late afternoon incident, which occurred last week outside the Shafer Court Dining Center.

In each case, the computer was grabbed, and the individual ran away from the scene, Bennett stated. No weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported.

According to Bennett, the suspect is described as a black male, 19-25 years of age with a thin build, wearing a baseball cap. He was last seen in an older model gray vehicle.

Police have taken steps to increase their presence in the area. In the meantime, VCU Police suggest students and employees maintain awareness of their surroundings, take care with personal belongings, and report all suspicious activity promptly to the VCU Police at 828-1234.

Anyone with information which might be helpful to the police are asked to call Lt. Ingram at 640-1864.
