Virginia Independent Film Festival

On Feb. 28, the Virginia Film Office will present the Virginia Independent Film Festival at the Byrd Theatre. The event will host 12 films ranging from four to 97 minutes in length. For $2 (with a valid student ID) audiences can experience everything from an American solider finding her identity in Islam to a stick figure coming to life to save a friend and enemies working together on a backwater planet. The festival will feature two VCU affiliated filmmakers. African-American Studies Department Chair Sean Utsey directed a documentary about African-American burial grounds in Richmond and student Alexander Germanotta directed a film of interviews exploring people’s views on death and the afterlife. Sit In, Stand Out

On Monday, Feb. 22, Richmond CenterStage will host Sit In, Stand Out at 7 p.m. The event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Richmond 34 Sit-in at the Thalhmier’s Building. The evening will feature performances by R&B musician John Legend and Amaranth Contemporary Dance Company, led by dance and choreography faculty Scott Putman. For ticket information call 327-5752.

Duchess of York at The National

On Feb. 25 at 8 p.m., Richmond’s own Duchess of York will perform at The National. The band, which has a plethora of singles, released an E.P. in February 2009. Now, working on new material for an upcoming album, this performance marks the band’s long-awaited return to Richmond venues.  If you can’t make this concert, the band will next perform at a Haiti relief benefit Feb. 27, at Gallery5.
